New book: Fishing, Foraging and Farming in the Bolivian Amazon

The author Lisa Ringhofer, Desk Officer for Latin America and Africa at Hilfswerk Austria International, analyses the environmental relations of the indigenous Tsimane' families of Campo Bello, a small village in the Bolivian Amazon.

The study describes the natural resource management as well as the land and time use of the village population. With this empirical information, the author establishes biophysical sustainability indicators. The book provides methodological and conceptual advances in the field of sustainability science and provides a vital reader for researchers and development practitioners in social ecology and ecological anthropology.

The indigenous community described in this publication stands for the many thousands of villages in developing countries that, in light of an ever more globalising world, are currently steering a similar development course. This book equally contributes to increasing the efficiency of professional development work, as it shows what the specific impacts may be when implementing a development programme or project.

Lisa Ringhofer is a sociologist / social ecologist with a research focus on indigenous resource management and society-nature-interactions. She works as a Desk Officer for Latin America and Africa for projects and programmes in the field of ‘rural development' and spends various months of the year in projects in Nicaragua, Bolivia and Mozambique. Freelance researcher at the Institute of Social Ecology, University of Klagenfurt; since 2008 she gives guest lectures at the project International Development and at the Institute of Cultural and Social Anthropology in Vienna.
